2 Years of My Side Piece!
Welcome to my 100th newsletter, and happy 2-year blogiversary!
I started My Side Piece in 2020 to force myself to write more. Being a writer felt out of reach, and I wanted a way to build up my portfolio. The rules of the blog were simple: write about whatever I want, have a finished product by Sunday, and be comfortable sharing.
That last step is the hardest. I still get anxious hitting the “publish” button.
What helps most is knowing the amazing subscribers I have on the other side. Since last year, that list has doubled. Thank you for being a reader and sticking around to watch me grow!
Over the last 100 Sundays, I’ve seen myself get better and more confident in my writing. In the second year of My Side Piece, I’ve added Hump Day Quickies, created merch, and started a subscriber-only program. This blog has given me the opportunity to speak in classes, freelance on sexual health projects, and experiment with my writing.
It also motivated me to publish my first book.
(As an aside, I’ll be hosting a book event in Toronto on August 20th. Get your copy signed, listen to a live reading, grab a coffee and help celebrate my first publication! Click here or follow me on social media to get details about “Lattes and Lemmings”)
Above all, My Side Piece has encouraged me to see myself as a creative. Because of you, I can confidently call myself a writer.
Today, I’m taking a moment to reflect on my favourite pieces from the last year. Let me know if I missed any of yours!
Stronger Than Yesterday
June 2021
Britney Spears is officially free! I’ve followed her conservatorship case closely (and have talked about it incessantly) since 2019.
This post commemorates the day Britney got her voice back in court, though I’ve also written about her father, her freedom, her right to nudes, her use of Bitcoin, and her shady manager…
Get Over It
March 2022
How do we live up and let go in a post-COVID, pre-war world?
I wasn’t super fond of this post until my dad used it in a lesson plan for his elementary school students. You never know what will resonate, and I’m still so humbled to have had my work used in a classroom.
